5.19 RELEASE OF METHANOL FUEL IN ENGINE ROOM

5.19.1 Actions to be taken in case of Methanol fuel release or leak in the Engine Room

(a) In the event of a Methanol fuel release or leak in the Engine Room, certain actions must be taken.

(b) Firstly, the General Emergency Alarm shall be sounded, and the Bridge/Master must be informed.

(c) Engines shall be put on standby and stopped after steering away from traffic areas or congested waters.

(d) All crew must be mustered, head count should be taken, and missing persons should be identified.

(e) Steps should be taken to mitigate the methanol fuel outflow in case the automatic changeover to LSFO does not happen.

(f) The Head Office, Agents, and Charterers should be notified as applicable.

(g) The atmosphere of the Engine Room must be checked using MeOH gas detectors, and two members of the Emergency Party wearing SCBA sets should enter the Engine Room to check the atmosphere again and ascertain the quantity of methanol fuel leaked.

(h) Depending on the quantity of methanol fuel leaked, it may be necessary to dilute it with water and shift the spill to portable drums.

(i) Once all the methanol fuel spilt has been collected in drums, the gas atmosphere should be checked again to ensure that it is safe for entry to the Engine Room space.

(j) The VDR data and CCTV recordings must be saved.

(k) Finally, normal operation can be resumed after receiving confirmation from the office.
